Tata Power, DGPC to Develop 5,000 MW RE Projects

Tata Power entered into a major strategic alliance with Bhutan’s Druk Green Power Corporation (DGPC), a subsidiary of Druk Holding and Investments, for the development of 5,000 MW of clean energy in the Himalayan nation.

This collaboration represents the largest partnership in the clean energy sector between India and Bhutan, with DGPC being the country’s only generation utility. The agreement focuses on the development of renewable energy (RE) projects, including 4,500 MW of hydropower and 500 MW of solar energy. The hydropower projects will feature key initiatives such as the 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydro-Electric Project (HEP), 740 MW Gongri Reservoir, 1,800 MW Jeri Pumped Storage, and 364 MW Chamkharchhu IV.

Tata Power Renewable Energy (TPREL), a subsidiary of Tata Power, will oversee the development of the solar component. These projects will be developed in phases, supporting Bhutan’s growing energy needs and contributing to sustainable development in the region.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed in Thimphu between key representatives, including MD of DGPC, Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, and Tata Power’s Praveer Sinha. The ceremony was attended by Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Dasho Tshering Tobgay, along with other senior government officials.

Prior to this partnership, Tata Power had already acquired a 40 percent stake in the 600 MW Khorlochhu Hydroelectric Project, further reinforcing its commitment to the region’s clean energy future.
