JSW Energy, led by Sajjan Jindal, plans to set up a wind turbine blade manufacturing plant in Karnataka to ensure a consistent supply of wind turbine generators (WTGs) for its renewable energy projects. This move will guarantee an assured supply of WTGs for its operations, and result in cost savings.
Setting up such a plant typically requires an investment of around USD 50 million, with the capacity to assemble 400-500 turbines annually. JSW Energy, which operates a 12.5 million tpa steel manufacturing facility in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, has available land to establish the new WTG manufacturing unit.
Additionally, the company operates a 225 MW solar power plant in the same region, dedicated to powering its steel plant. This strategy aligns with India’s position as the second-largest wind supply chain manufacturing hub globally, according to the Global Wind Energy Council. JSW Energy’s investment in local manufacturing capabilities highlights its commitment to improving the supply chain for its renewable energy projects while contributing to the wind energy sector.
In March, JSW Renewable Technologies, a subsidiary of JSW Neo Energy, signed a technology licensing agreement with China’s Sany Renewable Energy to produce 3.6 MW WTGs in India. JSW Energy has plans to purchase four MW WTGs from Sany and is in preliminary discussion about acquiring five MW WTGs, as larger turbines are preferred for sites with space constraints.
