Andhra Pradesh Offers 3 Potential Sites for BPCL’s Refinery Project

The Andhra Pradesh government has offered three potential sites — Machilipatnam, Ramayapatnam, and Mulapeta — for Bharat Petroleum’s (BPCL) proposed refinery and petrochemicals complex.

Project Proposal: BPCL is considering building a large integrated refinery with a capacity of 9-12 million tonnes per year. To accommodate this, about 800-1,000 acres of land would be needed.

Government Support: The state government, led by N Chandrababu Naidu, is keen on this project as it would boost the economy and create jobs. It is still unclear if the land will be provided for free or if other incentives will be offered, as is common with such large-scale projects.

Comparison with Other Projects: For context, Indian Oil is planning a similar refinery project in Tamil Nadu with a capacity of 9 million tonnes, estimated to cost Rs. 330 billion. Meanwhile, Hindustan Petroleum’s refinery in Rajasthan with the same capacity is expected to cost Rs. 720 billion.
