India’s MNRE may hold Auctions for RTC, Hybrid Projects

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy may now hold renewable energy auctions only for round-the-clock and hybrid projects. This will help in reducing the problem of intermittent supply and making clean power more competitive against traditional thermal plants.

The government will do plain solar and plain wind tenders in future. The plan is to do only RTC and hybrid tenders. The government has proved with the RTC tender, in future it will be a business case for everyone.

Recently, MNRE auctioned a first-of-its-kind 400 MW RTC tender where the levelised winning tariff emerged at Rs. 3.60 per unit. The Ministry also conducted an auction in January 2020 for 1,200 MW solar-wind (hybrid) storage project with assured peak power. Developers were asked to provide six hours of stored power.

The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), the nodal agency through which the ministry conducts auctions, has requested developers to submit bids in June 2020 for another 1,200 MW wind-solar hybrid auction which will take place later 2020.
