Oman Reaches Financial Close on 120 MW JBB Wind IPP

A consortium comprising EDF power solutions, Al Khadra Partners and OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) has achieved financial close for the 120 MW Jaalan Bani Bu Ali (JBB) Wind Independent Power Project (IPP) in the Sultanate of Oman.

The milestone follows the signing of a 20-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Nama Power and Water Procurement Company (Nama PWP) and paves the way for the development of one of Oman’s major onshore wind power projects.

Located in South Al Sharqiyah Governorate, approximately 440 km from the Port of Duqm, the JBB Wind Project will comprise 16 wind turbines, each with a generation capacity of approximately 7.7 MW, providing a total installed capacity of 120 MW.

The project is scheduled to achieve commercial operation in Q3 2027.

Once operational, the JBB wind farm is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to supply more than 13,500 Omani households annually while avoiding more than 270,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO?) emissions per year.

The development scope includes the engineering, construction, installation and commissioning of a 120 MW onshore wind power generation facility, comprising 16 high-capacity wind turbines and associated infrastructure required to connect the project to Oman’s electricity network.

The project will also involve the development of supporting infrastructure and facilities required for the operation and maintenance of the wind farm, creating opportunities for local employment, skills development and participation by Omani companies during both the construction and operational phases.

Financial close represents a major milestone for the consortium and demonstrates lender confidence in the project and Oman’s renewable energy sector.

For EDF power solutions, JBB marks the company’s first wind power transaction in Oman and strengthens its presence in the Sultanate’s rapidly developing renewable energy market.

Al Khadra Partners, part of the Hind Bahwan Group, is supporting the development as a key consortium partner, while OQ Alternative Energy, the renewable energy arm of OQ, is participating as Oman’s national champion for renewable energy.

The JBB project is expected to contribute to Oman’s efforts to diversify its electricity generation mix and increase the share of renewable energy to at least 30% by 2030. It also supports the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 and the Sultanate’s ambition to achieve Net Zero emissions by 2050.

Beyond renewable power generation, the project is expected to deliver wider economic benefits through job creation, knowledge and skills transfer, development of local supply chains and increased In-Country Value.

The JBB Wind Project forms part of Oman’s broader strategy to harness its significant wind and solar resources, strengthen energy security and establish a more diversified and sustainable electricity sector.
