NHPC Begins Construction of Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project

NHPC Chairman and Managing Director Hupender Gupta formally inaugurated the construction activities of the 240 MW Uri-I Stage-II Hydroelectric Project on 31 May, 2026.

The ceremony was marked by initiating the first blast for Adit-3A leading to the head race tunnel (HRT) through the existing Adit-3 in Uri, Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir. This marks a key milestone in the execution of the strategically important hydropower project, which is expected to significantly enhance renewable energy capacity in the region and contribute to India’s broader clean energy transition.

During the visit, the Head of Project provided a detailed briefing on construction progress, engineering plans, and execution strategies aimed at ensuring timely and efficient development. MD Gupta congratulated the NHPC project team and MAX Infra (I) on the successful start of construction work. He stressed the need to speed up project execution and aim for early completion before the scheduled deadline, while ensuring strict adherence to quality, safety standards, and cost efficiency.

The 240 MW project is designed to strengthen power generation infrastructure in Jammu & Kashmir while also supporting regional energy security and sustainability goals. The event was attended by senior NHPC officials, including the Director (Technical), along with representatives from the district administration, police authorities, and local community members, reflecting broad stakeholder participation and support for the project’s implementation and long-term developmental impact in the region.
