India: Rooftop Solar Installations to Surpass 1 million by March 2025

Four states have exhibited remarkable progress. India’s rooftop solar initiative PM Surya Ghar Yojana is rapidly transforming the country’s energy landscape as it is on track to install over 1 million by March 2025.

In a statement, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy expects installations to reach 20 lakh by October 2025, 4 million by March 2026, and the targeted 10 million by March 2027.

Within the past nine months, 0. 63 million has been installed under the programme, or an average of 70,000 per month, led by Gujarat, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Uttar Pradesh. This reflects a ten-fold increase in monthly installations compared to the average of 7,000 per month prior to the launch of the scheme in February 2024.

Initial hurdles, such as power load capacity and regulatory barriers, were addressed to accelerate the rollout. Distribution companies streamlined processes and waived Technical Feasibility Reports, whilst timely inspections and net meter availability expedited subsidy releases.

Expanding the vendor base and offering affordable financing through the Jan Samarth Portal for systems up to 3 kilowatts further boosted deployment, the ministry said.
