Work on Rs 33.38 Billion Petrol, Gas Pipeline to Start from Today

The construction work of the Paradip-Hyderabad petroleum product pipeline and Bokaro-Angul gas pipeline will start from December 24. These pipelines will provide petroleum products and gas for domestic, industrial and commercial use. Paradip-Hyderabad pipeline project will be executed by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) through an investment of Rs 33.38 billion, while the Bokaro-Angul gas pipeline will be implemented by the Gas Authority of India Limited (Gail) (India) with an investment of Rs 34 billion.

 

Addressing the media here, the officials of both the companies said Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation for these projects on December 24. Both these projects are expected to be completed within two years. PC Chaubey, executive director (south eastern region pipeline), IndianOil, said, “The Paradip-Hyderabad pipeline project involves laying of a 1,212-km pipeline from Paradip to Hyderabad traversing through 16 districts of Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It will cover 330km and entail an expenditure of Rs 9.23 billion.”

 

The project, having a capacity of 4.5 million metric tonnes per annum, will take its inputs from Paradip refinery and feed the upcoming petroleum product depot at Berhampur in Odisha, existing depots and upcoming depots in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Pumping facilities will be installed at Paradip and Berhampur in Odisha and Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.

 

He said the project, which can create employment opportunities for around 1200 persons, will be completed by August 2020. After the completion of this project, the delivery of petroleum products to important consumption centres in the region will be achieved in a safer, more reliable, environment-friendly and cost effective manner. This will be an underground pipeline project, he added.

 

“The Bokaro-Angul pipeline will be 667-km long, of which 367 km will be in Odisha and 300km in Jharkhand. It will cover five districts in the state and six districts in Jharkhand. Of the total investment of Rs 34 billion, the company will spend Rs 18 billion in Odisha. It is scheduled to be completed by December 2020,” SK Pathak, chief general manager (construction), GAIL (India) Ltd, said.

 

Pathak said the pipeline will benefit a large population in the districts enroute with clean and green fuel in the form of household piped natural gas (PNG) connection and establishment of compressed natural gas (CNG) station for easy accessibility to cooking fuel to households and filling in vehicles. It will also cater to the energy demands of steel, refractories, aluminum and other industries en-route the pipeline, besides generating employment opportunities for thousands of local youth, he added.
