A project to build the Middle East’s largest LNG terminal in Kuwait will be completed in March 2022, nearly a year behind the original schedule, said a Kuwaiti official.
A consortium of South Korea’s Hyundai Engineering & Construction Co. and Korea Gas Corp. is constructing the terminal in the Southern oil and gas hub of Al-Zour under a $2.9 billion contract they won in 2016.
The project, owned by the state-owned Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC), was scheduled to be completed in March 2021 but was delayed due to the spread of Coronavirus.
“The project is progressing smoothly and will be fully operational in March 2022,” project coordinator at KIPEC Salman Al-Mazeedi said at a virtual oil seminar in Kuwait.
Mazeedi said the LNG terminal is the region’s largest project and one of the world’s largest gas terminals by storage capacity, comprising eight giant tanks.
The terminal in Al-Zour, home to one of the world’s largest oil refineries, will allow Kuwait to receive 22 million tonnes of LNG a year, the report said.
