Indian Oil & Gas PSUs Target 0.7mn tpa Green Hydrogen Capacity

Oil and gas sector public sector units (PSUs) have a target of setting up 0.7 million tpa green hydrogen manufacturing capacity by 2030. Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas Rameswar Teli stated this in his address at the three-day international conference on green hydrogen (ICGH 2023) on 5 July, 2023.

Besides, the PSUs are also working on establishing 120 kilo tonne of green hydrogen capacity by FY26. India’s annual demand for hydrogen is around 6 million tonne, which accounts for about 6 percent of the demand globally.

Highlighting some of the key projects, the Minister further informed that Oil India has initiated a pilot plan for mixing green hydrogen in gas pipelines in Jorhat, Assam, and producing 10 kg of green hydrogen per day. Gas utility firm GAIL has also started a project of mixing 2 percent green hydrogen in piped natural gas (PNG) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. Also, studies are being undertaken to run hydrogen fuel-cells powered buses and on-storage technologies.

The conference is being organized by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE), will see domain-specific research interactions on hydrogen production, storage, distribution and others and discussion on green financing, upskilling, and startup initiatives in this area. Delegates from countries such as the US, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, Africa, besides India are participating.
