Subansiri Lower HEP Completes Installation of Generator Stator at Unit 5

The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation’s (NHPC) 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project achieved a major milestone with the successful installation of the generator stator for Unit 5.

The 395-tonne component, with an 11.5-mtrs. bore diameter was precisely lowered into the generator barrel in a complex operation, marking the largest generator installation in any Indian hydro project. NHPC CMD Rajendra Prasad Goyal called it a "significant achievement" that will enable early commissioning of five units (1,250 MW) out of the total eight, each with its own independent water conductor system — a rare engineering feat.

Senior NHPC officials attended virtually, while on-site supervision was led by the project’s executive director, senior engineers, and equipment supplier representatives. Approved in 2003 and launched in 2005 with a 2014 target, the project faced major delays, halting completely in Dec 2011 after about 50 percent completion of critical infrastructure. The installation signals renewed momentum for the long-delayed project.
