Sojitz, IOC-GPS JV to Establish 30 Biomethane Facilities with $400mn Investment

In a strategic move to enhance India’s renewable energy infrastructure, Japanese trading firm Sojitz has joined forces with IOC GPS Renewables (IGRPL) to establish 30 biomethane production plants by FY26-27. This USD 400 million investment aims to address both energy and environmental challenges in India.

The collaboration will produce biomethane, a clean energy source derived from agricultural waste. These 30 plants are expected to generate 160,000 tonnes of biomethane annually. This renewable fuel can replace fossil fuels, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainable energy practices across India

Sojitz’s focus on green transformation (GX) aligns with India’s push for renewable energy. By leveraging GPS Renewables’ expertise in plant design and operations, and the gas distribution network of Indian Oil Corporation, the partnership aims to scale up biomethane production across India.

Mainak Chakraborty, CEO of GPS Renewables, highlighted, “Sojitz and GPSR group have a shared vision of improving India’s energy self-sufficiency.” The project supports India’s growing energy demand, focusing on biofuels as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.
