Indian Cabinet Clears Rs 375bn Coal Gasification Scheme

The Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved a Rs 375 Billion scheme to promote surface coal and lignite gasification projects, in a move aimed at reducing India’s dependence on imported LNG, urea, ammonia and methanol.

“The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved a Scheme for Promotion of Surface Coal/Lignite Gasification Projects with a financial outlay of Rs 375 billion," according to an official statement.

It added that the scheme marks a major step towards accelerating India’s coal/lignite gasification programme, advancing the national target of gasifying 100 Million Tonnes (MT) of coal by 2030, strengthening energy security, and reducing dependence on imports of key products such as LNG (more than 50% imported), urea (nearly 20% imported), ammonia (about 100% imported), and methanol (around 80–90% imported).

Under the scheme, the government will provide financial incentives for new coal and lignite gasification projects that produce syngas and downstream products. The total outlay has been fixed at Rs 375 billion and is expected to support gasification of around 75 MT of coal and lignite.
