IOC to Supply LNG for Andaman & Nicobar’s First Gas-Based Power Plant

Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) will supply liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Andaman & Nicobar Islands’ first gas-based power plant, which is being developed by NTPC.

IOC said that it is working closely with stakeholders to establish LNG infrastructure for NTPC’s upcoming power generation facilities in South Andaman and Great Nicobar. The oil marketing company said its existing operations in the region place it in a strong position to support the gas-based project.

NTPC, India’s largest state-owned power producer, is building a 50 megawatt (MW) gas-based power plant in the island territory. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in December 2018. NTPC is currently in the process of securing land for the proposed facility and is in active discussions with relevant authorities. The plant is likely to come online by 2027–28.

This project marks an important step in extending cleaner energy options to India’s remote island territories. By leveraging LNG for power generation, the initiative aims to reduce reliance on imported diesel and improve energy security in the region.
