Phase II of Basra Natural Gas Liquefaction Plant Inaugurated

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al-Sudani has inaugurated the second phase of the Basra Natural Gas Liquefaction Plant project, with a capacity of 200 MMcf/day, in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil, Engineer Hayan Abdul-Ghani Al-Sawad.

The Minister of Oil stated, "We have completed a major production facility in the field of gas investment, namely the second production line of the Basra Natural Gas Liquefaction Plant (BNGL). This achievement will add a production capacity estimated at (200) MMcf/day to the national production of invested associated gas."

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Oil indicated that this achievement will support the gas-provided capacities to support power generation stations. Furthermore, investing these quantities will increase the rate of stopping the flaring of associated gas during oil production operations, leading to its cessation within the next few years. The Minister added that gas investment completion rates have increased from 53% to nearly 70% since the government took office. These rates have reduced gas emissions and fulfilled Iraq's commitments to the Paris Climate Conference. Furthermore, the increased investment rates have provided fuel for power plants.

The Minister praised the efforts of oil sector workers who are achieving successive accomplishments in cooperation with international companies operating in the oil fields. The opening ceremony was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry for Extraction Affairs, Mr. Bassem Mohammed Khudair; the Undersecretary of the Ministry for Gas Affairs, Mr. Izzat Sabir Ismail; the Executive Director of the Basra Gas Company; the General Manager of the South Gas Company; the Governor of Basra; and a number of oil company officials.
